Basic Tools

Basic tools ( Bahco not pictured )

There are three tools which are fundamental to bushcraft.

  • A knife
  • A saw
  • A fire-flash
Without these even the most simplest tasks could not be completed such as making a fire.
I also carry the Fallkniven DC4 so i can keep my knife razor sharp at all times.

"A dull knife is a dangerous knife"

The Bahco Laplander saw is one of the best on the market. It cuts through wood like a hot knife
through butter and makes light work of anything thrown at it. Also unlike other folding saws, the lock is very strong and will not snap if put under pressure. It can even be used to split logs!

The Mora Clipper 840 is a very robust carbon steel knife. it comes form the factory with a razor sharp edge. It has a scandi grind which allows you to easily keep it in tip top condition.
Also it is very easy to sharpen and can be purchased from £12. It has a very easy to grip plastic handle with rubber inserts. For value to money, nothing can beat it.

These two tools together make a powerful combination.

As with any knife, use will make it blunt. If you are at home a basic dual-grit oil-stone will do, however if you are in the field then I recommend the fallkniven DC4, it is one of the best on the market right now.

Now we move to the fire-flash.
I myself use a Bear Grylls fire-steel. It comprises of two parts just like any other fire-steel. the striker and the rod. it will last for thousands of strikes as very little of the rod is used each time.

These items will last you a life time if they are cared for well.

All three items can be purchases on Amazon for: £45.26

  • Mora clipper 840 mg:  £13.67
  • Bahco Laplander:        £18.40
  • Bear Grylls fire-steel:  £13.19
So go and get them while you can.
