Wild Fallow Deer!

Wild Fallow Deer in their natural habitat.

Fallow Deer rut from September to October. We visited Attingham Park in October, the height of the rutting season, there were numerous deer to be seen, grazing and relaxing in the bright warm sunlight. The Deer pictured were on the Attingham Estate in Shropshire. The common Fallow Deer has a brown coat that is mottled with white. It can reach speeds of up to 30 mph. It can also make jump up to 1.75 meters high. This allows it to evade predators.

Fallow Deer were introduced to England by the Romans. It is not known if they died out and were reintroduced by the Normans. Their preferred habitat is open grassland and mixed woodland.
Only the males have antlers and in their first two years it is only a single spike. During the rut they are relatively ungrouped, however at other times of the year they can stay in groups of up to 150.
